If you're a golfer and you have never been to the beautiful
mountains of West Virginia put it on your bucket list for sure. The PGA visits
the quaint little resort town of White Sulphur Springs in the Allegheny
Mountains of West Virginia for the Greenbrier Classic that begins today.
Playing golf in West Virginia is a true challenge for all
levels because the Allegheny Mountains are the stars of this show. Just walking
the “Old White” course at Greenbrier should get you a mountain climbing merit
badge of some sort.
The resort has a much storied history as the late Sam Snead,
World Golf Hall of Famer and the winningest player in PGA TOUR history, was the
resort’s pro for 29 years and served as Golf Professional Emeritus from 1993
until his death in 2002. The Greenbrier is an award-winning resort and a National
Historic Landmark so challenges abound.
I do recommend the open face roast beef sandwich that you can
get at the grill. Super with mashed potatoes and gravy – granted it is a bit
not heart healthy - but it is good nevertheless. OK who will be headed to West
Virginia this weekend?
The big story last year here was that Ted Potter, Jr.he began
the final round four shots behind leader Webb Simpson, but ended regulation
tied with Troy Kelly. Potter birdied the
third extra-hole playoff to win his first TOUR event in his 16th career start.
Potter defends his title against an impressive field that
includes last week’s AT&T National winner Bill Haas, past Greenbrier
Classic winners Scott Stallings (2011) and Stuart Appleby (2010), Phil
Mickelson, Billy Horschel, Boo Weekley, Bubba Watson, Louis Oosthuizen, Lucas
Glover, D.A. Points, Nick Watney, Ryo Ishikawa, Jordan Spieth, Graham DeLaet,
Carl Pettersson, Trevor Immelman, Mike Weir, and Charles Howell III to name a
few.
