There is nothing in team sports that generates more drama
than a game 7 showdown. Tonight at 9 p.m.on ABC the Miami Heat will host the San
Antonio Spurs in the last game of the NBA Finals. We all know the cliches, win
or go home, a must win game, and one my all time favorites, both sides are ready
to end this thing on the court.
We know that fans in either Miami or San Antonio will be
elated as one of these teams will add another NBA title to their trophy case.
Meanwhile, the real winner at the American Airlines Arena will be ABC/ESPN.
For a network to get the true bang for their rights holding
buck they need series to go the distance and I am not just talking the NBA
Finals. From the first round to the hoisting of the Lawrence O'Brien Trophy,
ABC/ESPN and Turner Sports need as many playoff games as possible to maximize the
ad revenue while advancing the network and the NBA’s brand.
If we look inside the numbers, according to Nielsen
estimates for the week of June 10-16, ABC won the week’s ratings race. They led
in adults 18-49 with a 2.7 rating/9 share, followed by NBC (1.7/5), Univision
(1.3/4), Fox (1.2/4) and CBS (0.9/3). ABC was also the leader in adults 25-54
(3.0/9) and total viewers (7.5 million).
How important has this NBA Finals series between the Heat
and the Spurs been to ABC in the terms of ratings?
The week that the network aired the Oscars is the last time they
won the ratings race since last season’s NBA Finals.
