Looking at the weekend schedule there was not a great deal of fanfare about the Women’s U.S.Open, the first major of the LPGA season. The event is being held at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, New York. The beautiful club on Long Island is a showcase course and a great place to watch a tournament. But it is a total loss when it comes to TV ratings and interest this weekend.
There are more people
watching the tape delay events from the Munich X Games on ESPN then are following
the first major of the LPGA season.
NBC will have the coverage today and Sunday 3:00 p.m. till
6:00 p.m. each day so those who wish to see the some very talented women play
golf. Meanwhile, most golf fans will be tuned to CBS where the AT&T National
will be taking place at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Maryland
just outside Washington, D.C. (Coverage times can be found here.)
Look, I enjoy the LPGA Tour they have some of the most gifted
young women ever to play the game.
Players like Inbee Park, Stacy Lewis, Suzann Pettersen, Na Yeon Choi and So Yeon Ryu are outstanding and worthy of golf fans time and viewership.

The LPGA is very much a global entity and all you have to do
is to look at the top players on their roster.
There are 8 very strong players from Asia but the United States, Europe and Australia are all represented in the top 25 players on the LPGA Tour.

It is time for the LPGA to get a real big promotional
makeover. They need someone that will get them out of the Witness Relocation
Program and make the relevant tour.
I can see the perfect match in the ultimate businessman
Donald Trump who has become a major force in the golf world. TrumpInternational Golf has a very impressive list of golf courses around the world and looks to expand.
There are few people on the planet who are better promoters
than Trump. He is a natural born salesman and a gifted match maker. Make no
mistake about it Trump is a perfect match for the LPGA.
He could begin things with a sports version of the Apprentice
on NBC that would focus on enhancing every aspect of the LPGA. That type of exposure would be great for the LPGA and players could be showcased on the
show.
Trump could make sure that all of his resorts both in the United
States and Scotland would host key LPGA tournaments. His partnership with NBC
and the Golf Channel could mean max promotion on the television and broadband side. .
How about holding the
LPGA Championship at his posh Trump National Golf Club located on the Potomac,
river in Sterling, Virginia over the 4th of July weekend.
Think of it a week after Tiger Woods AT&T National
leaves town Trump heads to the Nation’s Capital for a big 4th of
July event at his club and with his partner NBC in full can put things in full
promotional mode on the LPGA’s home the Golf Channel. He would be able to
attract plenty of patrons to the event and ratings could be sold.
At the end of the day the LPGA needs Trump and it would not
hurt “The Donald,” to have some high profile events held at his properties. So,
it is time for Michael Whan the Commissioner of the LPGA pick up the phone and call
Trump so the two can make a deal.
